Getting An Immigration Agent

by teamcreatives

Getting help when applying for Australian travel visas is definitely a good idea when you want your application to go through as smooth as possible. And this is where getting yourself in touch with an immigration agent will surely come in handy. However, before you go and sign up for a meeting wth an agent, there are a few things that you need to consider.

First of all, you need to think about on whether to get an immigration agent or an immigration lawyer. Though they both are working in the same field, and many have in fact confused one for the other, there are some clear distinction between a lawyer and an agent. The main distinction is that the agent handles overall visa assistance, while lawyers are focused more on the legal aspects involved. Also, lawyers can work as agents and not vice versa (in fact, it is recommended that you get a lawyer that is also an agent, since they have more expertise).

So which one do you chose? Basically, if you are only in need of general visa assistance, then an immigration agent, whether a lawyer or not, is the right one for you. However, if yours is a special case, then it would be better to go for a lawyer service.

Once you have that one settled, then it’s time to look for an agent. The first thing that you need to do here is to head to the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA). MARA is an arm of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) of Australia that registers and monitors migration agents. The agency’s site will provide you a list of legitimate and duly recognized agents, which is important in order to be sure that you are getting the right people. The site also has the contact details of these agents as well as allowing you to contact them directly through it.

One thing that you need to look for in an agent is his track record. Registered agents are usually more giving in showing their record to potential clients (another pro in choosing them). Here, you need to get one that has more experience in handling cases similar to yours. In case you have no choice but to go with a newly registered agent, then you need to see if he has the credentials to handle such a case.

A big consideration in getting an agent is, of course, the cost. Naturally, these doesn’t come cheap. On the average, a single session with an agent will cost you around five hundred dollars. It is also most likely that you won’t be able to complete everything in a single session. Also note that the more senior (and more experienced) agents charge more that their younger counterparts. However, the fees are highly regulated by MARA, so these would still be in the reach of many applicants.

Nevertheless, even with all the rigors that you have to go into when looking for an immigration agent, everything pays of when he is able to help you obtain your visa.
